Classes in Greenwich & Islington

Adults Contemporary Jazz Dance in London

Learn to dance contemporary jazz from the very beginning!

Angelina Jandolo Dance School teaches adult contemporary jazz classes in London, currently giving weekly term-time classes in the Greenwich & Islington areas.

Each of our friendly and enthusiastic teachers have trained professionally in internationally renowned conservatoires and institutions, going on to perform at national and international levels. The classes are syllabus-free, but every year we offer the opportunity to take exams through the globally-recognised IDTA for those who wish to do so.

We keep the lessons at a sustained pace – you’ll get a workout as well as learning jazz techniques. Classes are built to help students progress, but are challenging too: both complete beginners and those with existing experience will learn and grow as dancers while keeping fit and social.

Adult jazz dance classes in London

Currently, classes in adult ballet are offered in Greenwich. Scroll down to find links to the individual location page, which contains a timetable of currently-bookable classes.

It also includes a list of other dance styles available in each location.

Learn at your own pace

Exams are available but not mandatory – we prefer our students to come under their own motivation, whether that be to socialise with likeminded dancers, stay in shape or try something brand new. Those who choose to take part in exams will be prepared for yearly examinations through the IDTA exam board.

Book your lessons

Payments are taken by term, but your very first lesson can be attended via a one-off payment, to check that you enjoy the class.

Adult Contemporary Jazz FAQs

How do I pay?

We are offering a trial class billed as a one-off payment of a single class. After the trial class, all fees are paid per halfterm.

For example, if you would like to try adult contemporary jazz in Greenwich:

The trial class would be a single payment of £9.70. Then, the five weeks left in the half term would be billed for £48.50.

We take payments via credit/debit card directly through the booking page, at least 24 hours before your class.

Should I take ballet or contemporary jazz classes, and what is the difference?

Contemporary is a 20th century style rooted in the works of choreographers like Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Bob Fosse. You can find examples of all of their dances on youtube to get a better idea of the style if you are curious!

Ballet refers to classical technique which has been developed since the 15th century, using precise and highly formalised set steps and gestures.

The two classes are quite different in format, and ultimately which you prefer is down to your own personal preference.

Do you teach adult jazz classes to complete beginners?

Yes. We currently teach beginner and intermediate/advanced classes in Greenwich & Islington.

Can I take contemporary jazz exams?

Our school is IDTA registered, and every year around June and November we offer all students the opportunity to enter for an exam relevant to their grade/level. It is not mandatory, but has proven to be very popular, as students are able assess their progress and feel a sense of achievement.

If they choose, adults will prepare for a ‘medal test’, which consists of a few dances that the whole class will learn over the previous term.
IDTA is recognised by the Council for Dance Education and Training (CDET), and more information can be found on the IDTA website.

What are the differences between your beginner and intermediate/advanced classes?

Beginner classes are suitable for anyone who has had no previous experience, or for those who are returning to classes after a long break.

Intermediate/advanced classes are faster paced, and therefore are for anyone who has previous recent/current experience of dancing or has attended the beginner class for a while and would like to take their technique to the next level.

Will I need any specific clothing or equipment for contemporary jazz dancing?

If you are a beginner, you are very welcome to attend the class in bare feet or, socks and any sport clothes you feel comfortable moving in.

We recommend not wearing anything too baggy, to allow the teacher to see and correct the posture if necessary.

Can I take private contemporary jazz lessons?

We do offer private lessons if you are unable to come to our group lesson or wish to deepen what you have been learning in class.

Our private lessons generally take place at the Greenwich Forum at a time and day of your convenience, weekends included. We charge £60 an hour and could look for alternative venue if you wish.
